Bulk Density of White Fused Alumina: Why It Matters and How to Compare It

Bulk density is an important but often misunderstood property of white fused alumina (WFA) グリット. It describes the mass of loose abrasive that occupies a defined volume under a specified test method. It is not the same as the true or specific gravity of aluminum oxide.

Buyers sometimes request high-density white corundum without defining the method, grade or application. That description is incomplete because bulk density changes with particle size distribution, grain shape, moisture, handling and the test procedure.

Moisture and Agglomeration

Moisture can change flow, agglomeration and the volume occupied by fine powder. Samples should be conditioned consistently before comparison.

Test Procedure

Filling speed, funnel dimensions, tapping, vibration and operator technique influence the result. Use an agreed FEPA, ISO or customer method rather than an undefined factory procedure.

Why Bulk Density Matters

  • Bonded abrasives: it can help indicate grain packing and shape, which affect wheel structure and behavior.
  • Coated abrasives: grain shape and packing affect coating weight and orientation, although bulk density alone is not sufficient.

  2. Name the bulk-density test method and units.
  3. Condition samples in the same way.
  4. Compare multiple production lots, not one sample.
  5. Review particle shape and size distribution with the result.
  6. Test the material in the finished abrasive or refractory formulation.
  7. Set an acceptance range based on process capability and application results.
