Start With the Application, Not Only the Grit Number

1. Confirm the Particle Size Standard and Test Method
Ask the manufacturer to state the standard and edition used for classification. FEPA F macrogrits and microgrits, FEPA P grades and JIS grades use different limit values and test methods. A simple grit conversion chart is useful for preliminary selection, but it should not replace an agreed particle size specification.
For microgrits, request the actual distribution data or the relevant upper and lower control limits. If surface scratches are a major risk, ask specifically how oversize particles are monitored.
2. Separate Typical Chemistry From Guaranteed Chemistry
A website may show a typical Al2O3 value, but a purchase specification needs guaranteed limits for the parameters that affect your process. Depending on the application, these may include Al2O3, Na2O, Fe2O3, SiO2, magnetic material, moisture, pH or electrical conductivity.
Do not rely only on the phrase high purity. Ask which method is used, how often the test is performed and whether the value on the COA is an actual lot result or a standard typical value.
3. Evaluate Oversize and Batch-to-Batch Consistency
For precision lapping and polishing, a small amount of coarse contamination may cause scratches and rejected parts. For coated or bonded abrasives, a shift in distribution may change coating density, cutting speed and abrasive life. The supplier should be able to explain classification, final screening, cleaning and lot-release controls.
Useful evidence includes a particle size report, retained sample, sieve residue result, microscope image and previous-lot trend. The exact evidence depends on the grade and agreed test standard.
4. Review the Quality Documents Before the Sample
Request a technical data sheet, safety data sheet and a sample certificate of analysis before testing. This confirms whether the supplier can communicate specifications clearly. For European buyers, discuss REACH supply-chain responsibilities with the importer or only representative instead of accepting an unsupported statement such as REACH certified.
A professional document package should identify the product, test method, unit, specification limit, lot number, production or inspection date and authorized reviewer.
5. Test a Representative Qualification Sample
A free sample has little value if it is specially prepared and cannot represent normal production. Ask whether the sample comes from a regular production lot, whether a retained sample is kept and whether the first bulk order will follow the same agreed specification.
Test the sample under normal machine speed, pressure, coolant, binder and workpiece conditions. Record removal rate, finish, scratches, tool life or other application-specific results. This creates an objective approval standard for future deliveries.
6. Check Packaging and Traceability
Powder can absorb moisture, become contaminated or lose identification during transport. Confirm bag construction, inner liner, net weight, pallet protection, label format and container loading. Each package should be linked to a lot number. For fine powders, discuss dust control and safe handling information in the SDS.
7. Evaluate Technical Response and Corrective Action
