White Fused Alumina vs Brown Fused Alumina: Key Differences and Selection Guide

백색 용융 알루미나 (WFA) and brown fused alumina (격아) are two of the most widely used conventional abrasive grains. Both are hard aluminum oxide materials, but they differ in raw material, chemistry, 강인함, friability, contamination risk and cost. These differences affect grinding, blasting, coated abrasives and refractory performance.

The best material is not the one with the highest purity or lowest price. It is the one that produces the required finish, removal rate and service life in the buyer’s actual process.

Raw Materials and Production

White fused alumina is made by electrically fusing selected alumina. After cooling, it is crushed, cleaned and classified into macrogrits, microgrits or refractory fractions. Its chemistry is dominated by Al2O3, with controlled sodium, iron and silica-related impurities.

Brown fused alumina is produced by electric arc fusion of bauxite with carbonaceous and other process materials. Its TiO2 and other constituents contribute to the toughness that makes BFA effective in heavy-duty abrasive applications.

Actual chemistry varies by grade and manufacturer. Buyers should use guaranteed limits and lot COA results rather than assume that every white or brown alumina has the same composition.

경도, Toughness and Friability

Both WFA and BFA are very hard. The practical difference is often toughness versus friability. Brown fused alumina generally withstands higher impact and pressure before breaking down. White fused alumina is more friable and can expose new sharp edges as it fractures.

This does not mean WFA always cuts faster or BFA always lasts longer. Performance depends on grain shape, size distribution, bond, machine speed, pressure, coolant and workpiece. A sample comparison under normal production conditions is the most reliable selection method.

Which Is Better for Grinding Wheels?

White fused alumina is commonly selected for tool steels, hardened steels and heat-sensitive precision grinding where a cool, sharp cutting action and clean grain are valuable. Brown fused alumina is widely used for general steel, weld grinding, snagging and other applications requiring toughness and economical stock removal.

Grinding-wheel manufacturers should also specify the FEPA F grade, bulk density, grain shape and chemistry that match the vitrified or resin bond. Color alone is not an adequate raw-material specification.

Which Is Better for Coated Abrasives?

Both materials can be used in abrasive belts, discs, paper and cloth. BFA is common in general metalworking and woodworking because of its toughness and cost efficiency. WFA may be selected for cleaner cutting, specialty finishes or contamination-sensitive workpieces.

Where FEPA P grades are required, do not substitute an F grade from an approximate conversion table. Confirm the coated-abrasive distribution and evaluate coating density, cutting rate and abrasive life.

Which Is Better for Sandblasting?

Choose WFA when low iron contamination, a clean white abrasive or a controlled finish is important, including selected stainless steel and non-ferrous parts. Choose BFA for general surface preparation, rust and scale removal, and applications where toughness and reuse economics are more important than color or very low iron content.

Blasting buyers should compare surface profile, breakdown rate, dust generation, recycling cycles and cost per cleaned area rather than only price per tonne.

Which Is Better for Refractories?

WFA is used in high-purity alumina refractories and formulations where lower impurity levels are required. BFA is widely used as a tough, dense alumina aggregate in general refractory castables and shaped products. The correct choice depends on service temperature, slag chemistry, abrasion, thermal cycling and the complete particle packing design.

How to Select Between WFA and BFA

  1. Identify the workpiece or refractory service environment.
  2. Define the required grit standard and particle distribution.
  3. Decide whether toughness, friability, low contamination or cost is the main priority.
  4. Agree chemistry, bulk density, magnetic content and other critical limits.
  5. Test representative samples using the same machine, pressure, bond or formulation.
  6. Compare total process cost: output, finish, scrap, media life and downtime.

Buyer Checklist

  • FEPA F, FEPA P, JIS, mesh or customer size specification;
  • guaranteed Al2O3 and relevant impurity limits;
  • particle shape and bulk density where required;
  • magnetic material or iron contamination limit for clean blasting;
  • representative sample, TDS, SDS and lot COA;
  • MOQ, packaging, lead time and destination;
  • retained-sample and corrective-action process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is white fused alumina harder than brown fused alumina?

Both are close to Mohs 9. Their different fracture behavior and toughness are usually more important than a small nominal hardness difference.

Which abrasive is cheaper?

BFA is generally more economical, but delivered price and cost per processed part depend on grade, consumption rate, recycling and process results.

Can WFA replace BFA directly?

Not automatically. The replacement may change cutting rate, wheel life, surface finish or refractory behavior. Match the grit standard and test a production sample first.

Which is safer for stainless steel blasting?

A suitable low-iron WFA grade is commonly preferred for contamination-sensitive stainless surfaces. Confirm chemistry and magnetic-content limits and verify the cleaned surface.
