White Fused Alumina Microgrit for Precision Lapping and Polishing

白刚玉 (世界足协) microgrit is used in precision lapping, fine grinding and polishing processes that need hard, clean and controlled abrasive particles. The nominal grit number is only the starting point. Surface finish depends on the full particle size distribution, 超大控制, 颗粒形状, cleanliness and interaction with the slurry, pad or lapping plate.

This guide focuses on selecting and qualifying WFA microgrit for industrial finishing rather than listing every possible use of white alumina powder.

Why Use WFA Microgrit?

  • 高硬度: supports efficient material removal on many hard surfaces.
  • Friable cutting action: grains can fracture and expose new edges during use.
  • Low iron profile: suitable for selected clean or contamination-sensitive processes when the correct grade is specified.
  • Controlled fine sizes: microgrits can be classified to FEPA F, FEPA P, JIS or customer-defined distributions.
  • Chemical and thermal stability: useful across a range of industrial finishing conditions, subject to compatibility testing.

Typical Workpieces

Depending on grade and process, WFA microgrits may be evaluated for technical ceramics, 玻璃, hardened metals, stainless components, mineral products and other precision surfaces. It is not automatically the best abrasive for every workpiece. 碳化硅, diamond, cerium oxide or other materials may perform better in specific stages.

Selection should begin with the workpiece hardness and brittleness, starting roughness, target finish, stock-removal requirement and equipment.

The Most Important Quality Controls

粒径分布

Two powders with the same nominal grade can have different distributions. D50 alone does not show the coarse tail or fines. Agree the standard, test method and acceptance limits that correspond to the process.

Oversize Particles

Abnormal coarse particles may create deep scratches that remain after the next finishing step. For scratch-sensitive applications, request an oversize or residue control and ask how the supplier prevents cross-contamination between grades.

颗粒形状

Angular grains generally cut aggressively, while shape also influences packing, slurry movement and contact with the workpiece. Microscope images can support comparison, but application testing is still required.

Chemistry and Cleanliness

Relevant limits may include Al23, sodium, iron, silica, magnetic material and soluble residues. The required controls depend on the workpiece, slurry and downstream cleaning process.

水分, pH and Conductivity

These parameters can affect flow, dispersion and interaction with additives in sensitive liquid systems. They are not required for every process, but should be discussed when the customer has agglomeration, foaming, corrosion or stability problems.

喂养, JIS and Micron Grades

FEPA F microgrits, FEPA P microgrits, JIS grades and micron descriptions are not direct equivalents. A value such as 10 micron is incomplete unless it states whether it is D50, maximum size or another measurement. Instrument and dispersion settings also influence laser-diffraction results.

Use a conversion chart to identify a candidate grade, then compare the actual distribution and run a qualification trial. 看看我们的 white fused alumina grit standards guide.

How to Run a Qualification Test

  1. Record the current abrasive grade, supplier COA and lot.
  2. Define machine, plate or pad, speed, 压力, slurry concentration and cycle time.
  3. Measure the starting surface and target roughness.
  4. Test a representative production sample, not a hand-selected laboratory sample.
  5. Compare removal rate, Ra/Rz or other finish metrics, scratch count, consumption and cleaning.
  6. Inspect the complete process for contamination from equipment or previous grit stages.
  7. Approve the sample together with a written bulk specification.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

ProblemPossible causes to investigate
Random deep scratches超大号, 结块, dirty equipment, cross-contamination or workpiece debris
Slow removal rateGrade too fine, low concentration, worn slurry, low pressure or unsuitable abrasive
Unstable finish between lotsDistribution, 形状, slurry preparation or machine-condition variation
Settling or poor dispersionParticle size, 密度, dispersant, pH, mixing or storage time
Surface contaminationAbrasive impurities, water quality, plate/pad residue or handling environment

Information to Include in an RFQ

  • workpiece material and size;
  • current grit standard and supplier grade;
  • target surface finish and removal rate;
  • dry, wet, slurry or fixed-abrasive process;
  • critical chemistry or oversize limit;
  • monthly quantity, packaging and destination;
  • current quality problem, if any.
